With the exception of my wedding dress, prom dresses, and bridesmaid dresses being altered by professional seamstresses, for the first time ever, I took an article of clothing to be tailored recently. How odd that I’ve spent an arm and a leg (okay, the bill actually went to my parents, but you know what I mean) altering dresses that were only worn one time but have never spent the $7 to tailor a wardrobe staple that gets far more wear.
Even though I’ve been on this planet for thirty years and swooning over clothing for about 28 of of them, I have always bought my garments dependent upon how they fit off the rack. Yes, it’s certainly easy when the stars align and you find the perfect pair of jeans that fit like a glove, no alterations needed, but we shouldn’t have to pass-up a potentially amazing piece if that’s not the case. When you think about it, we all come in different shapes and sizes so why do we expect to all fall under a XS-XL tag or any other generic, numerical size?
I like the elongating effect that flared jeans give but every pair I tried was either too long or too short. I found these jeans at Nordstrom and loved the cut and fit with one exception, they were too long on me (and I’m 5’7″)! Because I liked them so much, I initially tried to get away with wearing them with my tallest wedges but they still scraped the ground. After
too much a little deliberation, I decided to bite the bullet and send them to the local dry cleaner to be hemmed.
I don’t know why I was expecting them to come back looking like an 8th grader in Home Ec hacked off a few inches with craft scissors and sewed them back together but what a difference. Not only did the hem look exactly as it did pre-alteration but my flares are now truly the perfect fit for me. I feel like I’ve been living under a rock my whole life and have just seen the light for the first time…oh the clothing possibilities 🙂
Can we also talk about this bag for a minute? From the cognac color down to the tassel detail, it is perfect in every way. It holds a ton and would be great for traveling or for a mama on the go! I will be wearing it a lot so I apologize in advance for how many times you may see it. It also comes in black and a pretty deep red color that’ll be perfect for fall 🙂
