You know those products you find, start using, start loving, and then you ask yourself…”why the heck didn’t I know about this sooner?” Well I’m going to take the worry out of all of those potential FOMO moments and the hours spent reading reviews by rounding up my picks for best buys. I’ve done the leg-work and am sharing my favorite tried and true products that I’ve used, I’ve loved, and will repurchase again and again. The Products I’m Loving series will be split into categories and this time, we’re talking all about skin.
Did you know that skin is actually the body’s largest organ? Once I learned that, I really started thinking about what I put on my face and body and how to take care of it as best I could. Skincare has become pretty important to me and I’m really trying to fine-tune my regimen. This hasn’t always been the case (unless you count washing my face with hand soap and slapping on some as-needed OTC spot treatment, a regimen) but now that I’m slowly creeping up on the big 3-0 (say it isn’t so!), I’ve found myself paying particular attention to the products I’m using. I want to make sure I’m treating my skin right, keeping it in the best shape possible, and avoiding products with harmful chemicals. Preventing wrinkles and fine lines (insert mourning emoji) and keeping it clear is always a top priority and so let’s jump right in…
Cleansers: I really love the Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser for daily use as it’s gentle on the skin and costs less than a Starbucks Venti anything. I keep it in my shower and use it each morning to remove excess oils and prep my face! I typically use the Vasanti Facial Cleanser at night for a deeper clean. It has anti-aging properties, is paraben-free, and when
I’m not being lazy I use it in combination with my Clarisonic, I can really notice a difference in how clean my skin feels. For make-up removal or when I’m on-the-go, I like using the Yes To Cucumbers Facial Wipes. They are 98.7% natural and smell ah-mazing. These wipes are more like mini towels and are both dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested. No need to worry when removing eye makeup!
Exfoliating Scrubs: Did you ever have your face slammed into the sand whilst being tossed around like a penny in the dryer by a breaking wave? No? Well I have and let me tell you, that post-trauma facial-stinging is exactly what my skin felt like after using some OTC exfoliating scrubs. I’d like to slough off dead skin, not like 12 layers of epidermis. The St. Ives Green Tea Scrub is the best drugstore option I’ve found although I personally prefer the Vasanti Brighten Up! Scrub. My M.I.L. gave me a sample from her Birchbox and it was love at first use. This product removed any dead skin while still being gentle and left me with a brighter, smoother complexion. I bought the full-sized bottle as soon as I ran out! I recently purchased the whopping $3 Elf Lip Scrub and it. is. awesome. It removes any dead skin on the lips and leaves you with a perfect pout! My lipstick game has just been taken to another level!
Masks: I’m a sucker for masks and always have been. It’s likely a mental thing but I swear I can actually feel them working while they’re on my skin. I love either the Queen Helene or CVS Mint Mask to help dry up blemishes, blackheads, and keep pores clear and for under $5, you can’t beat it. It’s definitely pricier but the Dermalogica Skin Refining Masque is a winner. It contains no artificial fragrance or coloring and helps absorb excess oils and soothe inflamed areas. One tube lasts me a good 12 months so in my opinion, it’s worth the splurge!
Anti-Acne: Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion is salicylic acid liquid gold and that’s the bottom line. This product has single-handedly saved my skin on more occasions than I can count and I’ve failed to find a comparable option in the last three years. It is formulated for cystic acne which deterred me at first as that’s not a skin-issue I suffer from but I’m so glad I tried it anyway! Any time I feel a blemish coming on, I apply this to the area at bedtime and when I wake up, Voila!, clear skin! If you already have a blemish, it will drastically reduce the size and redness after just one application. The buffering lotion is a life-saver (again, dramatics aside) and is the one product I do not travel without.
Anti-Aging: Clinique Anti-Gravity Repairwear Eye Cream is a newer purchase but a good one, at that. I’ve been
paranoid worried about getting fine lines around my eyes and want to prevent and slow down the process. I have been looking for an eye cream that’s not $1k (champagne wishes and LaMer dreams) and this was a recommendation by my mother-in-law who has like, zero wrinkles. I’ve really enjoyed using it the past month and after nightly application, my under-eye area feels noticeably hydrated and skin feels more “plump”. Okay, awkward choice of words but it’s true!
Moisturizers: My sister used to work for Evian and got me hooked on the Evian Facial Mist. Although I no-longer get free samples (wahhh), this product or a similar one like it is worth the spend. My derm has recently put me on some new products that have been super drying. Even after a moisturizer, my skin can resemble an Arizona desert after a sand storm, sans the tumble weeds. The face mist layered over my daily moisturizer seem to really help and you can also use it to set face makeup- double-duty! (I want to try this one from Honest!) I use the Cerave AM Lotion in the morning as it was the only moisturizer my dermatologist said would absolutely not clog my pores. It also contains SPF 30 which is great for preventing sun damage! Although this lotion has a PM counterpart, I prefer the Mario Badescu Oil-Free Moisturizer at night. I find it’s a bit heavier and gives the extra boost of hydration my skin needs without causing break-outs. I’ve been using this for two years and it really helps prevent and repair dry skin. This moisturizer is oil-free, won’t clog pores, helps with acne-scarring, and and has tons of anti-aging and skin benefits. Sold!
I hope you enjoyed this round up and as always, thanks for reading! If you have any suggestions for me, leave ’em below! I’m always looking for new products to try and would love to hear your recommendations!
