Happy First Day of Fall! Growing up in New York where we truly experience all four of the seasons, I quickly became partial to some more than others. I have always loved Springtime the best because it means sunshine, blooming flowers, warmer temps, and that the dreary, frigid, snowy days of winter would soon be a thing of the past. I have never been as fond of the fall simply because it meant that we’d have to head back to school, pack away our bathing suits and flip flops, and that the jingle of Mr. Softee’s Ice Cream Truck would no longer be resonating down the block as the days, sadly, got shorter.
With age comes wisdom (or so I’d like to think) and my late-twenty year old, wise self has finally warmed up to the idea of fall. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t exactly been rushing away the longer, sunnier days and warm weather but fall fashion makes me so excited that it softens the seasonal, transitional blow (that and the thought of dark mani’s and burning my pumpkin spice candles.) Towards the middle of August, I started thinking about the pieces that I couldn’t wait to break out for fall this year and what I needed to add to my wardrobe. I truly believe that you don’t need to spend a lot to update your look each year, as long as you have the basics. Given my current health situation, I can’t really shop around the stores despite the fact that I literally live next to a 4 story
heaven mall (like dangling a pacifier in front of a baby) and peruse the aisles for the perfect pieces. Instead, I’ve been scouring the internet for some staples that will take you from September to December, year after year.
Utility Coat/Vest: This is everywhere this fall, but I don’t necessarily think it’s anything “new.” Fashionistas alike are welcoming the olive colored trenchcoat or utility vest into their closets and rightfully so. This basic is as beautiful as it is functional. As the cooler temps start rolling in (sigh), these pieces layer lovely over t-shirts to sweaters and go with just about everything! I picked up mine from Loft.
Suede booties: These are a must have. I love me a good suede bootie and own them in several colors including black, burgundy, and cognac. They pair with anything from skinny jeans and cropped rolled cuffs to skirts and dresses. Do yourself a favor and if you haven’t already, go grab yourself a pair!
Marsala Bag: Marsala is the “it” color of the season as it was named the Pantone Color of the Year 2015 (and whatever notoriety that brings.) I happen to already own two wine-colored bags from previous years and they have definitely gotten their use (cost per wear, ladies!) I typically wear black during the colder months as it doesn’t make my pale skin look so ghostly (the struggle is real) so I welcome a warm, deep, rich color like this one as an accent!
Chambray shirt: Maybe it’s because I had such a deep affection for my jean jacket growing up but any excuse to wear some denim that’s soft on my upper half is a-okay with me. I bought my chambray shirt at Nordstrom Rack on a lunch-break whim two years ago and it hasn’t let me down.
Statement Sunnies: I felt this was necessary to put on the list even though sunglasses are a year-long staple because I believe that sunnies truly polish off an outfit. This autumn, I’m loving my round-tortoise pair inspired by Karen Walker (except that mine were $24.50…holla!) You can find the perfect sunglasses to polish off your look at every price-point and in every shape so you can really tailor them to what suits your bank account and face-shape best.
Tartan Blanket Scarf: Despite the fact that tartan print scarves were all over the place last fall, I didn’t pull the trigger on the purchase until they were on clearance in the spring. I’m so looking forward to wearing my blanket scarf as again, this fall-staple is both practical (hello, cold weather) and fashionable.
Leather Leggings: Do I even need to explain why? #sonecessary
Plaid Shirt: I owned about 5 plaid, flannel shirts when I was in elementary school and loved wearing them with white-washed jeans tucked into my cowboy boots (do yourself a favor and don’t even try to picture the look.) Fast-forward 15 years, subtract the white cowboy boots (so-long, lovers), and insert a pair of leather leggings– current fall 2015 perfection.
Fitted Flare Jeans: Because there will always be something timeless and effortlessly chic about a good pair of fitted, slightly-flared jeans. Distressed, dark-wash, however you want ’em, go get a pair if you don’t already own one. They elongate the leg, work well with any shoe, and are a great alternative to the skinny.
Happy shopping and as always, thanks for reading!
